Monserrat
Financial heart of the city.
Downtown and Congreso neighborhoods are where you will find most of the city’s public buildings and most of its banks and financial institutions. But in the evenings, the area also offers cinemas, theaters (mainly on Corrientes Avenue and Lavalle Street), restaurants, pubs, bookstores, bingo parlors and nightclubs.
Around Plaza de Mayo you will find the city’s government and historical buildings, such as the Casa Rosada (Government House), The Cabildo (Old Town Hall) and The Metropolitan Cathedral (XVIII Century).
Avenida de Mayo connects the Casa Rosada with the Congress Building and has beautiful period buildings throughout. The famous Café Tortoni is located at 825.
The Obelisk (65 meters high, built in 1936) is embedded in 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest in the world and, a few blocks away, the Colon Theater (1908), considered one of the finest opera houses in the world.
This entire area thrives with activity all day long and has a pulsating life all of its town.
